Eating ASMR

By Alex Carter

Food and mouth sounds — loved by some, aversive to others.

Eating ASMR centres on mouth and food sounds: crunching, chewing, sipping, and slurping. The related mukbang format, which began on Korean streaming platforms, combines eating with social interaction.
The same sounds that some people find pleasant can be aversive to others. Eating and mouth sounds are common triggers for misophonia.

Eating ASMR and mukbang

Mukbang originated on Korean streaming platforms and emphasises social, large-quantity eating, while eating ASMR focuses on isolated, close-mic mouth sounds for their texture.
Crunchy foods produce sharp, bright sounds; chewy and soft foods produce slower, lower ones. Which people prefer is individual.

Why some people react negatively

Eating and mouth sounds are a frequent trigger for misophonia, an aversive reaction to specific sounds. Kumar et al. (2017) found greater activity in the anterior insular cortex in response to trigger sounds in people with misophonia.
So the same content can be relaxing for one person and distressing for another.

Frequently asked questions

Why do eating sounds bother some people?

Eating and mouth sounds are a common misophonia trigger. Kumar et al. (2017) found greater anterior insular cortex activity in response to trigger sounds in people with misophonia, which may relate to the aversive reaction.

What is mukbang?

Mukbang is a format that began on Korean streaming platforms in which a host eats — often large quantities — while interacting with viewers. It overlaps with eating ASMR but emphasises social eating over isolated sound.

Can eating ASMR help you sleep?

It is not a typical sleep trigger — crunching and sharp mouth sounds tend to be alerting rather than calming. Softer triggers are more commonly used for sleep.
