How each sound works

Brown noise

Brown noise concentrates energy at low frequencies, creating a deep rumble similar to a waterfall or strong wind. Research suggests it helps mask higher-pitched distractions and promotes relaxation. The name comes from Brownian motion (random walk), not the color.

How does the spatial audio work?

The Soundscape Lab uses the Web Audio API's HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) panner to position sounds in 3D space around your head. When you drag a sound on the circular stage, it updates spatial position in real time. Headphones are required for the full effect — speakers collapse the 3D field into stereo.

Are the sounds real recordings?

No. Every sound is generated procedurally by your browser using mathematical algorithms. Brown noise uses a random-walk integration, rain uses filtered noise with random impulses, and fire uses stochastic crackling bursts. This means audio never loops audibly — each session is unique.

What headphones work best?

Any over-ear or in-ear headphones work for spatial audio. The HRTF processing is built into the browser's audio engine. Higher-quality headphones with good stereo separation will produce a more convincing 3D effect, but even basic earbuds deliver noticeable spatial positioning.

Does the timer stop all audio?

The timer gradually fades all sounds to silence over the final 30 seconds, then stops playback completely. This gradual fade is designed for sleep — an abrupt stop could wake you.

What does Meander mode do?

Meander slowly drifts the volume and spatial position of each active sound, creating organic variation. Instead of static ambient noise, the soundscape breathes — rain shifts subtly to the left, wind grows and recedes, fire crackles from different angles. This prevents auditory habituation where your brain tunes out constant sounds.

Which preset is best for studying?

The Focus preset combines pink noise with stream sounds and beta-frequency binaural beats (16 Hz). Pink noise masks distractions without being intrusive, flowing water provides a natural texture that aids concentration, and beta binaural beats are associated with alert, focused brain states.
